Professor Koji Ohkitani takes up prestigious new post in Japan

Koji will join the Research Institute in Mathematical Sciences at Kyoto University after 14 years here in Sheffield.

Professor Koji Ohkitani

Professor Koji Ohkitani is leaving the University of Sheffield to start a position at the renowned institute Research Institute in Mathematical Sciences (RIMS) in Kyoto, Japan. Professor Ohkitani joined the School of Mathematics and Statistics 14 years ago, after a previous role at RIMS, to hold a prestigious Wolfson Merit Award from the Royal Society of the UK.

A leading researcher in fluid dynamics, Professor Ohkitani contributed to the School in various teaching and administration capacities. We wish him all the best in his new position.

"I'm a physicist by training. I graduated from Kyoto University and held positions in Kyoto and Hiroshima before coming to Sheffield. One of my collaborators in the UK informed me of the opportunity to join the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

"In my time here, I've enjoyed networking with other UK institutions through seminars, workshops and conferences. A JSPS-funded workshop that was held with Sheffield engineers is particularly notable in that it enabled us to invite participants from Japan.

"In my new role, I'll be a professor in a research institute, who is supposed to lead the fluid mechanics research in the institutes applied mathematics group. I hope to keep in touch with colleagues in Sheffield, including the fluid dynamics group. I may give a talk for the Applied Mathematics seminar series when I have a chance to revisit."
