Research project options

"I am currently completing my fourth year as an industrial placement student at GSK, gaining a masters qualification whilst learning more about research and development in industry – a rare opportunity compared to other universities and one of my main reasons for choosing to apply to Sheffield.

"I wasn't sure if I wanted to work within academia or industry following my degree, so the opportunity to build relationships with, and learn from, senior scientists at GSK has highlighted the increased collaboration between the two sectors, and encouraged me to apply for a PhD within academia next year, and hopefully return to industry after that.

"Taking part in the Global Scholarship and Think Ahead SURE schemes at the University of Sheffield has really strengthened my application for this year whilst preparing me for the lab, and my work on the Bummit charity hitch-hiking committee gave me the skills required to actively seek out and collaborate with experts in the fast-paced industrial environment at GSK. I think it is as important to be good with people as it is in the lab when working within industry.

"This year has been invaluable in helping me to plan and prepare for my future career, and I would encourage anyone considering it to apply for a year in industry!"
