Online Handbook - Information for Mechanical Engineering Students
Congratulations for choosing to join, and being accepted into, one of Britain’s top Mechanical Engineering Departments. We have a world-wide reputation for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and research. But we are also a friendly Department with a lively and exciting atmosphere. I am sure you will enjoy your time here, and all our staff look forward to working with you.
You are here at the University both to learn and enjoy yourself. If you succeed in your studies you will grow, develop and gain enormous satisfaction. Your course and the associated work should not be a chore; enjoy your studies. However, you will certainly find that you have one of the highest work loads of any undergraduate programme. I like to think of the department as an academic gym- we provide the facilities and support, but you have to put in the hard work to achieve your goals.
It's important to remember that every undergraduate is a full member of the Department and we want you to feel a sense of belonging and contribute in full to the life and spirit of your new home.
The academic and the support staff are here to help you make the most of your opportunity to study here.
The University, the Department and Sheffield itself are great places to live and work and, for those that make the most of them, they offer unlimited opportunities.
