Reliable models of cutting are important components of surgical simulators. They are also very challenging ones, since they seek to model complex processes within the tissues themselves and interactions between the tissues and the cutting tool.
From a modelling point of view, the contact problem between the tissue and blade is not well understood, nor is the stress-strain (constitutive response of the tissues as they are loaded beyond their elastic range, and the numerical solution methods require special procedures to handle the topology changes that occur as the model is cut. This project could involve work on any of these problems.
