Self-healing composites for advanced aerospace designs
The aerospace market is extraordinarily competitive. A compromise between maximum take-off weight and strength is necessary. Advanced composites have high specific strength which has resulted in an increment of composites in new aerospace designs. However, damage on composites is sometimes undetected (e.g. delamination) which can result in ‘failure’. This research would focus in a relatively novel idea: a composite that can self-heal (SHC). The investigation would look at design, manufacture, and evaluation of several SHC configuration alternatives.
