|GIS mapping of rail networks has been used to identify correlations between environmental and operational factors and the maintenance requirements of the infrastructure. Building on this experience this research will focus on spatial and temporal analysis of the rail network together with climate data to identify technical requirements for increasing network resilience (i.e. ability to cope with climate change and other extreme events). Technical solutions will be identified to address the infrastructure elements found to be at risk from climate change. For example this may include design and test of track joints able to resist buckling over a wide range of temperatures, or overhead line structures better able to resist wind loads. The exact focus will depend on the interests of the candidate (fluids, solids) and industry progress in addressing the issues.
