Profile

Gary is an experienced educator, recognised for developing and delivering innovative, enterprising learning experiences that challenge students and build technical knowledge whilst enhancing transferable skills. He has particular expertise in authentic learning, building inclusive communities for learning, and supporting student transition into and out of higher education. He also has a strong interest in enhancing learning with technology.

With a PhD in linguistics, Gary worked for seven years as a university teacher in linguistics, becoming increasingly interested in teaching and learning, creating international award-winning learning activities, and receiving recognition through a University of Sheffield Senate Fellowship in 2012, and Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2015. Applying this pedagogical expertise, he moved into education and academic development to work with colleagues in engineering - developing effective, authentic learning experiences and supporting colleagues to enhance their teaching practice.

An advocate of practical, experiential learning, Gary helped to develop and launch iForge, the University’s innovative student-led makerspace. He was also a founding member of the Sheffield Engineering Leadership Academy (SELA), serving on the SELA Operations Board from 2014, before taking up the role of Head of SELA in 2016 with overall responsibility for the strategic development and operation of the programme.

He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2018, as University Teaching Fellow in Professional Skills. Gary is leading the development and integration of a spine of professional skills development throughout the Department’s degree programmes, to equip its students and graduates with capabilities to succeed in their studies and professional lives.
