Profile

After graduating from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Sheffield in 2004, I continued the work I began in as my final year project through to a PhD at the University. This project investigated the effect of electric fields on flames.

Following completion of my PhD, I worked for the University of Sheffield at the Low Carbon Combustion Centre, where I developed an atmospheric combustion facility and worked closely with several industrial partners to test new combustor designs. I also managed a work package in a EU framework 7 program, looking at the use of alternative fuels for aviation.

In 2011, I moved to the combustion design department at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery. I was based at the Lincoln site, which designs and manufactures gas turbines from 4 to 15 MW.

During my time at Siemens, I worked on projects ranging from designing new combustion systems, to optimising current designs. I also provided technical support to the entire combustion manufacturing process and final work acceptance test.

During this time, I also supported several students through the IMechE MPDS scheme and brought about significant improvements in failure rates by educating the workforce regarding the components they manufactured/tested.

In 2016 I moved to Uniper, formerly part of Eon. Here, I provided technical support for internal and external customers with gas turbines. I also specialised in emissions legislation and worked with partners across Europe on the implementation of the Best Available Techniques reference document (BREF) and the legal implications this new legislation would cause to the European power supply network.

I have always been very keen on learning how things work and building new things. I always have projects on the go and I hope to inspire a new generation to tinker! This inspired me to return to Sheffield University to begin my teaching career in September 2018.
