Master of Public Health Degree

School of Health and Related Research

Course Outline:
Students after the third year of medical school are eligible to apply to study for a Masters in Public Health (MPH) at ScHARR. As a national School of Public Health, ScHARR is a recognized centre for public health excellence and has considerable research and public health experience in the UK and internationally.

The MPH is a useful course that prepares graduates to work in public health, health leadership and management, and health services research. Graduates gain valuable analytical skills as well as the ability to approach problems with a strategic population-based focus. It has lifelong value and for many health organisations it is comparable to the MBA for businesses.

The MPH is a one-year course that runs from September to August with core and optional modules and a dissertation. Each year, we aim to offer a number of competitive fee reductions for MBChB students on a ScHARR-led MPH (not the MPH (ID), which can be used in addition to the automatic 10% discount you would receive also.

There are four different MPH courses on offer:


MPH: This course covers core public health subjects such as Key Issues in Global Health, Research Methods, Statistics and Epidemiology. It has a modular structure that also allows students to choose from a range of topics that suit their interest e.g. Health Promotion, Communicable Disease Control, Disaster and Emergency Management, International Health Systems and Policy, Strengthening Health Systems and others.

MPH in Health Service Research: These also provide core public health competencies but focus more on these applied fields. All three MPH courses involve a dissertation that includes options of work-based placements, primary research or literature reviews.

MPH – Management and Leadership: The course is suitable for clinicians and non-clinical professionals who aspire to be leaders in their health care organisations and systems, either in the UK or in their own country. It will help clinicians understand the world of the manager and managers the world of the clinician. The core of management science is coupled with options from the MPH programme, enabling you to study relevant public health topics and gain skills and knowledge in research appraisal.

MPH in International Development: This course run jointly with the Department of Geography and will appeal to those students who are interested in international health and development studies in particular. It includes an optional overseas field trip as well as a work-based placement.

MSc(Res) in Translational Oncology

Course Outline:

Students after the 3rd year of medical school are eligible to apply to study for an MSc(Res) in Translational Oncology. This one year, full-time masters programme, which can be completed in an intercalated year, will provide innovative research training in translational oncology, the process by which fundamental laboratory research informs the development of new therapies for the treatment of cancer. An integrated approach involving teaching from experienced research scientists, clinicians and patients, links recent research advances to personalised treatment in the clinic, focussing on how insights from the laboratory are translated into benefits for patients.

This MSc(Res) programme will give students an in-depth understanding of the scientific and clinical challenges pertinent to the management of tissue-specific cancers and offers theoretical and practical training in fundamental aspects of contemporary oncology. The course will be based in the Department of Oncology, in the Medical School, which is part of the Sheffield Cancer Research Centre. Students will be taught and supervised by highly interactive, multidisciplinary research teams of basic and clinical scientists applying state of the art approaches to translational oncology. The course also includes the opportunity to look at clinical cancer research through the eyes of survivors of the disease.

The course gives students a thorough grounding in five core components of Translational Oncology through taught modules in:

Cellular and Molecular basis of cancer

Cancer Epidemiology

Tumour Microenvironment

Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

Cancer Technologies and Clinical Research

Students also undertake a literature review and gain direct experience of performing a six month hypothesis-led translational research project. The aim of your project is to apply appropriate laboratory based techniques to test a specific scientific/clinical hypothesis and to write up the research in a scientific manner.

Medical students are invited to apply for this unique 1 year programme, funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and Arthritis Research UK Centre for Integrated Research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA). It is a collaboration between the Universities of Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield and is jointly delivered giving you the experience and expertise of 3 Universities in 1 course. CIMA hopes to create a legacy of researchers seeking to understand how our bones, joints and muscles function less well with age and how to prevent musculoskeletal disorders so as to ensure that longer lives are also healthy and mobile lives.

As a student of CIMA, you can expect to become:

Valuable and fully integrated members of a world class research centre (CIMA), liaising with investigators and presenting your own research at CIMA meetings, you will be fully embedded in the research activity of the Centre.

The MSc in Human Nutrition aims to provide you with a thorough grounding in core competencies in Human Nutrition and nutritional science. Specifically, we aim to:

• provide you with a core knowledge of the fundamentals of biochemistry, physiology, epidemiology and medicine as they relate to nutrition science
• provide you with knowledge and understanding of human nutrition beyond that offered at undergraduate level
• provide a learning environment that is informed by the academic and research background and professional experience of the course teaching staff
• provide a basic grounding in, and experience of, research skills and techniques
• develop your verbal and written communication skills
• enable you to assimilate and communicate the results of scientific research
• enable you to apply research philosophy and techniques to advance knowledge by creating and testing hypotheses through original research in Human Nutrition

The course combines teacher-centred and student-centred learning. Whilst some of the teaching is didactic, consisting of formal lectures and seminars, there is emphasis on student-centred learning by means of practical sessions, workshops, group debates, self-study units and individual presentations. Small group tutorials are held during the taught modules. Students undertake their research project independently, under the guidance of an academic supervisor.


Students are equipped with the necessary skills to work as nutritionists within community, industrial, academic and research settings.

The course is accredited by the Association for Nutrition.

Course Outline:

Our one year full-time masters programme in Clinical Neurology which can be completed in an intercalated year, will enable the student to apply the fundamentals of neuroanatomy and physiology to the clinical features of patients with neurological disease. An integrated approach links recent research advances to cutting edge management in the clinic, focussing on how insights from the laboratory are translated into benefits for patients. With an ageing population, neurological diseases represent an increasing economic burden to society and a cause of much suffering to patients and carers alike. We offer theoretical and practical training in clinical neurology and neuroscience research including practical experience in the dissection room to facilitate teaching of neuro-anatomy. During several themed modules, each focussing on a different patho-physiological branch of neurological disease, disease-centred lectures and small group tutorials provide the necessary theoretical knowledge into the current state of the art of diagnostics and therapeutics in neurology.

All students will complete four taught modules in the first two terms exploring Neuroinflammation, Cerebrovascular diseases, Neuroanatomy and Radiology and Neurodegeneration, during which there will be the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge to patients with neurological disease in small group teaching sessions and clinics. In the final semester students may undertake a research option will be able to choose from a range of clinical research projects either with direct patient contact or without patient contact which may include systematic review of service or previously collected data from clinical trials. The combination of practical teaching in neuroanatomy, course work projects, seminar programmes, taught modules, research and apprenticeship experience provides a range of subject-specific and transferable skills pertinent to a variety of careers, for doctors and other health care professionals considering a career in clinical neurology, neurological healthcare, academia or industry.

Students will be able to:

Develop independence of thought, intellectual curiosity and a critical approach to evidence, theories and concepts.

Foster a commitment to continuing professional development and lifelong learning.

Develop an understanding of the pathobiological mechanisms and modern thera-peutics of diseases of the nervous system.

Our one year full-time MSc programme offers theoretical and practical training about fundamental aspects of contemporary neuroscience at molecular, cellular, anatomical and behavioural levels and draws on examples from model organisms and patient-based studies. The MSc course combines research strengths across the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health and the Faculty of Science to provide an innovative and progressive programme of basic neurobiology and molecular biology through to neuroimaging and applied clinical practice.

The taught component of the MSc is delivered through lectures, tutorials and student-led group work during the first two terms. In the first term, there is the opportunity to select either option 1 (biomedical neuroscience based research skills) or option 2 (computational and mathematical modelling research skills). In the summer term, the 20-week research project will allow you to get practical experience of performing hypothesis-led scientific research. The aim of your project is to apply appropriate laboratory based techniques to test a specific scientific hypothesis and to write up the research in a scientific manner. You should learn to record, interpret and discuss your results and the implications of their findings. You will also be expected to participate in journal clubs, seminars and lab meetings, within the host Department, to complement your laboratory experience

Course Outline:

This is a School-wide, one year MSc that explores the current state of investigation of human biology at the molecular level and how that knowledge can be harnessed to maintain health, prevent illness and treat diseases. We give advice on preparative study, as students will need to have some fundamental understanding of eukaryotic molecular biology. In December, you choose from five optional pathways that are available: Experimental Medicine, Cancer, Cardiovascular, Genetic Mechanisms and Microbes & Infection.

The programme begins with the core learning in the areas of scientific philosophy, human genomics, disease genetics, immunological intervention, bioinformatics, laboratory practice and scientific writing. The pathway lectures are then taught during six weeks. The pathway modules lead into a pathway-related 20-week laboratory project. Projects are run by our colleagues in all departments of the Medical School as well as the Faculty of Science and you will be expected to participate in group meetings and departmental seminar programmes.

Expected Outcome
In the process of earning your MSc, you will have been exposed to cutting edge literature across a broad field of molecular biomedical research. You will have experience and insight into the practical reality of doing experimental biomedical research and contributing to a larger research effort. You will have learned to write scientific literature.

MSc in Reproductive and Developmental Medicine

Course Outline:

This is a one-year full-time postgraduate course that is suitable for students wishing to intercalate from their medical degree. It is particularly useful for students wishing sub-specialise or develop a career in Reproductive Medicine.

Course content spans a broad range of topics in reproductive and developmental medicine, with a strong emphasis on the scientific underpinnings of feto-maternal medicine and clinical embryology. The first half is delivered through a series of taught modules that cover foundations of reproductive biology, including gonadogenesis and gametogenesis. Subsequent modules build on this to explore in depth the biological chronology of events from fertilisation and implantation through to pregnancy and parturition. Various aspects of fertility treatment are also covered. Students learn about the law and policies surrounding reproductive medicine as a matter of course and also as they become topical. University academics and practising NHS clinicians deliver teaching and assessment is carried out through presentations, assignments and exams. During the second half of the course, students develop a depth of knowledge in a chosen area by engaging in a research project that culminates in the production of a thesis.

Genomic Medicine

The full-time MSc in Genomic Medicine combines the strengths from across the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Social Sciences, in combination with the Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service to provide a progressive programme of fundamental genetics and genomics, through to applied clinical practice and genomic research, whilst recognising the ethical, legal and social issues that arise in using genetic data.


You will study a range of core and optional modules, following the syllabus outlined by Health Education England (HEE) as part of the Genomics Education Programme, to provide you with an understanding of the scope and application of genomics within medicine and scientific/clinical healthcare research. The taught modules will involve biomedical scientists and clinicians, lawyers and bioinformaticians, thereby enhancing the inter-disciplinary nature of the course and will be delivered through lectures, tutorials and student-led group work during the first two terms. In the summer term the individual research project will provide you with first-hand experience and training in hypothesis-driven genomic research. You will learn to record, interpret and discuss your results and the implications of their findings. The MSc Translational Pathology (Neuroscience) combines core teaching of the fundamental aspects of major neuropathological diseases, with significant emphasis on the development of practical laboratory skills. In semester 1, you will take four modules designed to ensure that you have a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of neuropathology and neuroanatomy, and basic research skills including histopathology, molecular pathology and gene expression techniques. Medical Humanities

Course Outline

The Medicine in Society Masters provides a package of modules in medical humanities and social sciences: philosophy, history, sociology of medicine, and medical and health-related law. It aims to addresses the complexity of medicine in society, and the difficulty of dealing with medical situations from any single perspective. The MA will develop students’ skills in analsysing problems from the perspective of different disciplines and sectors where medicine and healthcare are practiced.

The course consists of
• a core module, where different perspectives are brought to bear on topical medical challenges through interdisciplinary team teaching drawing on faculty across the University, and with input from healthcare providers in the hospital, industry and policy;
• optional modules are in medical philosophy, history, sociology, ethics and law
• a dissertation
Students develop skills in working across disciplines, and in the analysis of complex lines of causality, in argumentation and communication.

Do you want to develop your knowledge and research skills in molecular and clinical aspects of cardiovascular disease?


MRes Cardiovascular Medicine: From Molecules to Man offers you a unique research focussed environment.

You will benefit from taught classes delivered by research scientists, clinicians and clinical research managers. You will also complete an 8 month research project in related specialist area of interest.

This could take you from discovery science in a laboratory through to working with patients in a clinical setting, or a career in research or industry.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimate by 2030 more than 23 million people will die annually from cardiovascular disease. The discovery of effective and novel treatments for disease starts with understanding the molecular and cellular processes involved.

The course is delivered by experts within the Cardiovascular field, both clinicians and academics. This course provides a unique research environment within which students can learn valuable transferrable skills encompassing the full range of activity from discovery science at the laboratory bench to the hospital clinic/bedside. The focus is upon developing new treatments for the clinical problems of; coronary artery disease and its complications, pulmonary arterial disease, and bleeding conditions. The research project forms the major part of your studies, during which time you will be integrated into the Department as a member of an established research team.

Human Anatomy and Education

Human anatomy is at the heart of many disciplines, from bioscience, medicine and dentistry, to archaeology and forensic science. But few universities offer training to help meet the global demand for accredited anatomy teachers. On this course, you can learn the specialist techniques and knowledge to train the anatomy experts of tomorrow.

The University of Sheffield's Medical Teaching Unit is one of a small number of laboratories in the UK where you can learn human anatomy through cadaveric dissection. You'll be able to develop advanced dissection skills and anatomical expertise using a wide range of plastinated specimens, professionally dissected wet specimens and anatomical models.

Alongside this, you'll be able to learn about teaching strategies and curriculum development from academics who have won awards for their own teaching. There is the freedom to reflect on pedagogical issues and get hands-on experience of teaching undergraduate anatomy students as part of the course.
