A scientist by trade with a degree in Zoology and Genetics I was drawn into the medicine arena by taking a part time PhD in Experimental Medicine. After 15 years as a researcher in respiratory medicine I undertook the role of academic manager for the Division of Clinical Sciences South.

During this time I was involved in the Human Disease course for the School of Clinical Dentistry ie Medicine for Dentists and this brought me into contact with the Medical School who needed someone interested in assessment to take on a QA analytical role.

I moved into the Academic Unit of Medical Education in 2006 and have been involved in many aspects of the undergraduate MBChB.

Research interests

As a Senior University Teacher my research role is limited but I am still involved in the AUMEs main area of research which is feedback. I represent AUME and AUPMC at the School's Graduate Research Committee and am a contact for potential PhD students.

I currently co-supervise one PhD student and am mentor to three others. I have been an internal and external examiner to both Masters and Doctoral candidates.

As an aside I am involved in supervising MBChB students in the Research SSC generally leading them through the complexities of quantitative and qualitative research methods in education.

Teaching interests

I am Director of Quality for the MBChB which includes programme evaluation, Deputy Lead for Assessment and Admissions, the Pre-med Director of Studies and Module Lead for Assessment on the PGCert in Medical Education.

As Quality Director I represent the School at the Faculty QSC. My main interests are in assessment and feedback, for which I have a number of years of experience within our UG degree, and student evaluation of the programme; I am currently on the Evaluations working group for the university.

Professional activities

My professional roles are currently around Quality Assurance. I am the Sheffield Quality Lead for the GMC with responsibilities for the annual reporting as well as attending the GMC meetings on quality that usually take in good practice dissemination.

I also attend the Health Education England Quality Group Meetings. With my assessment hat on I am a member of the Medical Schools Council Assessment Alliance (MSCAA) reference group where changes in national policy are discussed and opinion sought.

Other roles include being an external examiner for UG early years, and a chief examiner.
