Profile

I am a Honorary Professor and Consultant Gastroenterologist in Gastroenterology at The University of Sheffield & the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. I am a nationally recognised expert in advanced endoscopic therapy, chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic and upper gastro-intestinal cancer. I am pioneering novel imaging and therapeutic techniques in pancreatic disease. I am a co-author of the recent European and National Consensus guidelines in the management of Pancreatic Disease (2017 & 2020). My achievements in training, teaching, academic and managerial roles incorporating these specialist interests have led to recognition and increased profile of our department both nationally and internationally including our departments being recognised as a World Endoscopy Organisation (WEO) accredited unit and European neuroendocrine tumour centre of excellence.

Research interests

I am an active researcher in the areas of pancreatic disease, novel endoscopic techniques and academic gastroenterology. I am now the author or co-author of over 80 peer-reviewed journal manuscripts 134 publications and  with 1324 citations and a 'H'-index score of 21.  In the last 5 years I have completed supervision of 2 research fellows who were both awarded a higher degree (MD) from the University of Sheffield in the diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis.

Teaching interests

I organize a recurrent large (>100 delegates), national postgraduate pancreatology meeting with international speakers with successful funding to enable it to be free to attend and this also ran on line during the pandemic.

I co-chair the the Annual ‘Bardhan Fellowship’ Postgraduate Meeting: For the last 7 consecutive years I have developed a regional Postgraduate research presentation day for Specialist Registrars and Research Fellows from Yorkshire Deanery as part of this I perform a morning of live endoscopy training.

I have been the principal author or co-author of a number of 17 gastroenterology educational articles, review articles, clinical case based education articles and guidelines for peer reviewed journals

Professional activities

I am the outgoing elected Chair of the Pancreas committee of the British Society of Gastroenterology (Sept 2017-2020) and President elect for the UK and Ireland Pancreatic Society 2023.

I am the Clinical and Audit Lead for the National Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

Current projects

I am continuing my research work with an application currently to look at a unique computer programme to aid research into predicting nutritional status in pancreatic cancer which includes collaborating with European centres.
