Profile

I am a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals with a major clinical and research interest in occupational lung disease, holding the following roles; Consultant Respiratory Physician, STH Foundation NHS Trust, Co-Director of the Centre for Workplace Health (CWH), and Chief Medical Officer, Health and Safety Executive GB and HSE Northern Ireland.

I am an Honorary Professor of Occupational and Environmental Respiratory Medicine, University of Sheffield.

Research interests

My research interests are focussed around the broad interface between the work environment and respiratory health. For example, I have active research interests in health surveillance for workers exposed to potentially harmful exposures at work, in addition to the diagnostic processes used to identify work related diseases. This work has led to the development of professional standards in this area, and the ability to influence national policy.

My HSE role permits me access to, and involvement with, a wide variety of research projects and programmes that address wider workplace ill health issues including musculoskeletal and mental health problems.

Teaching interests

My teaching interests are related to the origins, identification and treatment of respiratory illness. At undergraduate level, I coordinate, and deliver much of, the phase 1a respiratory course in Sheffield, and at postgraduate level have been involved in many modalities of teaching delivery, including HSE based appointed doctor and workplace based training.

Professional activities

I sit on the British Thoracic Society Occupational Lung Disease Specialist Advisory Group and Clinical Statement group, and I Chair the European Respiratory Society Occupational and Environmental Group.

I have taken part in European (occupational specific challenge testing) and global (ATS/ERS occupational attribution of common respiratory diseases) taskforces.

I am a member of the GORDS group, a UK based group of occupational lung disease specialists and also I am the HSE and Department of Work and Pensions GMC Responsible Officer. My work on the Independent Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC) continues.

Research activity: I sit on HSE's research committee and as a consequence input into the necessary research governance and ethical frameworks. I am currently working on a number of research themes, including a pan European PEROSH wellbeing at work initiative and a set of strategic research programmes for the Health and Safety Executive. The latter relate to a number of aspects of respiratory health at work including artificial stone silicosis, asthma and COPD. I also retain an interest in the infant cohort study started by myself when I lived and worked in New Zealand, at the Wellington Asthma Research Group, between 1995 and 1997.
