Undergraduate courses: Your elective period
At Sheffield you will participate in an elective programme of seven weeks duration in your fourth year (phase 3b). The programme was established to provide you with first hand experience of the way medicine is being applied and is developing in other countries - and a valuable new perspective on the way things are done here in the UK on your return!
You are encouraged to take a lead in determining the type of work you want to do, and where you want to do it. All you have to do is find someone at the other end willing to supervise you. To assist you in finding a suitable placement there is an 'electives network' of informal arrangements with health care providers in other countries that run similar schemes, and many years experience at the University with running the scheme.
While the programme is aimed at providing experience abroad, it is possible to investigate areas of particular interest in the UK, such as:
- Mountain rescue
- Save the Children
- And so on...
The programme is compulsory, and a number of bursaries are available to help cover the cost of travel.
