I am enthusiastic educator passionate about developing person-centred doctors. When I was appointed as an Academic Training Fellow in 2009, my main focus was on embedding the principles of Diversity Education within the medical curriculum, including instilling values of curiosity, empathy, respect and self-awareness as core attributes of professional medical practice. I did this through developing a ‘Diversity Education’ seminar in the 4th year and a ‘Consulting through Interpreters’ session in the final year. This teaching led to being of 28 women at the University of Sheffield nominated for the Portrait of a Woman prize, which aims to highlight the contributions of women considered to be inspirational. The development and evaluation of this teaching was the action research project for my Masters in Education. My recent curriculum developments involve looking at skills needed to working with patients with long-term conditions. Central to this is an exploration of the role of the doctor, what informs it, how it has changed and how doctor’s can best help facilitate health. During my time as Senior Lecturer at the University of Tasmania and I was involved in developing their patient partnership programme for 4th and 5th year students in a way that encouraged students to engage with the patient perspective and develop shared decision making skills. I am currently looking at ways we can maximise quality in undergraduate general practice placements as well as enthuse and engage students with the intellectual challenge of clinical decision making in primary care.

Staff development and training
- Instituted quarterly phase 3b small group tutor meetings for training and QA.
- Training small group GP tutors to facilitate consultation session through interpreters.
- Trained small group tutors on how to develop shared decision making skills for year 5 students in Tasmania.
- Developed workshop on medical student professional behavior for GP tutors.
- My Masters in Higher Education involved collecting and analyzing data through focus groups, questionnaires and interviews and used an action research methodology.
- I supervise student research projects as part of their 6-week research attachments.
- Peer reviewer for the medical education journals 'The Clinical Teacher' and 'Innovait'.
- DIMAH (Diversity in Medicine and Healthcare): I am an Editorial Board member of this National Special Interest Group currently developing a national curriculum.
- UK CReME group (UK Clinical Reasoning in Medical Education Group) - Looking at approaches to help foster clinical reasoning and assess clinical decision making.
- Education Steering Group, Sheffield CCG: We advise on the strategic direction and quality provision of clinical education to primary care healthcare workers in Sheffield.
- Sheffield Medical Humanities group: Promotes collaboration at the interface between medicine and science on the one hand and arts and social sciences on the other hand.
