Wind Orchestra wins top national and international awards
In one of SUWO’s (Sheffield University Wind Orchestra’s) most active and successful years, the Orchestra has already given twelve performances with a repertoire of over thirty works, it has gained high National and International accolades and recognition.
On April 3rd in the RSAMD, Glasgow at the National Finals of the NCBF (National Concert Band Festival) SUWO achieved a GOLD AWARD in the Open Class judged alongside the best in the Country. While on the recent six concert tour of Belgium, in Neerpelt at the EMJ Festival were rewarded with a 1st PRIZE CUM LAUDE for their stunning performance where the standards were even higher with bands entering from all around the World. Our prize, awarded in a lavish (and very loud!) Eurovision Song Contest style ‘Proclamation’ with all 7000 performers of the day present, represents a mark of over 90% against the highest criteria and judged by a prestigious international jury of top professional musicians.
The Wind Orchestra is a talented and enthusiastic group of Wind, Brass and Percussion players selected from across the University it is a core ensemble of the Music Department which runs it with the help of a very active players management committee and is directed by Tony Houghton, assisted this year by student conductor Gareth Widdowson.
The Orchestra is grateful for the extra funds, especially this year, generously provided by the Students’ Union and the Alumni Foundation enabling us expand our schedule and bring cudos to the Department, the University and the City of Sheffield at home and abroad.
