Dominic McHugh to give talk for U3A
On 11 April, Dominic McHugh will give a talk on his new book, Alan Jay Lerner: A Lyricist’s Letters, for the University of the Third Age. Due to be published in July, the book is by far the most extensive study of the working life of one of the most prolific writers in Broadway and Hollywood history. Lerner’s credits include the lyrics and scripts for My Fair Lady, Camelot, Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon and Gigi, as well as the Oscar-winning screenplay for the film An American in Paris. The talk takes place in Cinema 4 at the Showroom Cinema, and admission is free.
Dominic’s new book is essentially a documentary biography, telling the life of Lerner through contemporary documents but with a focus on Lerner’s own perspective. The letters in the book were culled from over fifty special collections at universities and archives around the world. It will be published by Oxford University Press, who also published Dominic’s monograph, Loverly: The Life and Times of My Fair Lady in 2012. The paperback version of the latter will be released in May and launched at Dominic’s Arts Enterprise Festival and conference, Stagestruck!
