Are you ready for the #ChaplinBoom?

Chaplin imageKeystone Studios used this headline to advertise their legendary star comedian to international audiences. Are you ready? Because the ‘Chaplin Boom’ is coming to Sheffield from 23 - 30th May 2014 and is brought to you by Stewart Campbell and George Morton (Festival Directors) and the Department of Music’s Concerts team.

100 years ago Charlie Chaplin's 'The Tramp', one of the most instantly recognisable characters of all time, erupted onto the screen. Toothbrush moustache, bowler hat, tight jacket, baggy pants, oversized shoes; the product of Chaplin’s genius and an image immortalised forever.

Alongside some of Sheffield’s most vibrant arts organisations, the Department of Music delve into Chaplin’s life work as an actor, director, musician, composer and all round innovator. The #ChaplinBoom features film screenings, live music and talks at venues across the city including the Showroom Cinema and Kelham Island. Join us as we explore Chaplin’s life in this family friendly festival.

Festival Director Stewart Campbell said, “Charlie Chaplin was a true artist and one who exercised complete autonomy of his art, from conceiving artistic concepts, scripting, acting, directing, producing, editing and composing his own musical scores. Our festival examines many sides of this incredibly complex icon. Working alongside the University Film Unit and National Fairground Archive; the festival is presented in partnership with a number of vibrant arts organisations in the city. With contributions from visiting musicians and speakers of international renown and own talented students, it’s an opportunity to learn, listen and most importantly laugh out loud.”

Highlights of the festival include:
