On 20 January, Senior Lecturer in Musicology Dr Dominic McHugh gave a presentation at the Royal National Theatre in London as part of ‘Musicals Week’.

Led by Rufus Norris, the NT’s Artistic Director, ‘Musicals Week’ brought together a group of leading playwrights, composers, songwriters, directors and musical directors to stimulate new collaborations. The NT hopes that the outcome of the week will be a series of new musicals that might eventually be staged at the National Theatre and represent an exciting new direction for the genre.

Dominic was invited to give a talk on ‘The Evolution of the Musical’ in order to contextualise some of the more practical aspects of the week and offer advice from history as to how leading writers of the past have solved some of the genre’s most challenging problems.
