On Saturday 26 March, Dr Dominic McHugh appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Archive Hour to celebrate the 60th anniversary of My Fair Lady.
In a programme called ‘The Art of the Lyricist’, Dominic was interviewed about Lerner and Loewe, the composer and lyricist of the beloved musical, which premiered on Broadway on 15 March 1956. The conversation also broadened out to consider figures such as Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, and it drew on interviews from the BBC’s extensive archive to illustrate the history of lyric writing.
The show drew on Dominic’s leading research on Lerner and Loewe, which has been featured in the books Loverly: The Life and Times of My Fair Lady (2012) and Alan Jay Lerner: A Lyricist’s Letters (2014). He is currently co-editing Lerner’s complete lyrics (with Amy Asch) for publication in 2018 to mark Lerner’s centenary.
