Tim Shephard Judges National Schools Debating Competition
This week Tim Shephard was on the judging panel for the Bradford round of the national schools debating competition, Debating Matters, run by the think tank The Institute of Ideas. The competition pits A-level students at nearly 300 schools right across the UK against one another in over 70 rounds. The standard of critical thinking on display at the Bradford round, held at The Rose Bowl in Leeds, was exceptional, with heated debates on the topics of hate speech, smart drugs and renewable energy.
In October this year the University of Sheffield became a Judging Partner in the competition, a move that has seen us host the South Yorkshire round of the competition at our Humanities Research Institute, as well as sending staff volunteers to judge at other rounds in the Yorkshire region.
