Department of Music maintains impressive Top Six position in REF2014 results
We are delighted to announce that the Department of Music has maintained an impressively high level in the results of the Research Excellence Framework, announced today.
48% of Music's research is judged world-leading (4*), the 4th highest of any Music submission in the UK. All research-eligible Music staff at the University of Sheffield were submitted to REF 2014, with outputs including books, compositions, chapters, articles and performances.
Music at the University of Sheffield is ranked in the top 6 Music Departments nationally on overall score.
The REF assesses departments on the basis of outputs (books and papers written by members of the department), impact outside academia, and the environment of the department. Each element can be awarded 0 to 4*, where 4* research is “world-leading” and 3* is “internationally excellent”.
According to these criteria, 84% of our submitted research was judged to be world-leading or internationally significant, and our environment and impact scores were also impressively high across the board.
