Trip of a lifetime is plain sailing for two South Yorkshire sixth formers

Two South Yorkshire sixth formers will sail in the Tall Ships Adventure Voyage in Gran Canaria in February thanks to the University of Sheffield. Alison Smith from Dinnington Comprehensive School and Terry Noble from Wath Sixth Form College will experience an onboard lifestyle for seven days where they will get the opportunity to develop self confidence, communication skills and life skills.

Schools and colleges in the area were invited to nominate students to partake in the voyage, which is part of the University's Centenary Year celebrations. The 44 schools approached are all members of the University Compact Scheme, which aims to encourage students who might not ordinarily do so, to consider Higher Education.

Future students will also benefit from the experience as the Tall Ships Youth Trust has given the University two places for students involved in the Compact Scheme in 2006 and 2007.

The winners, Alison and Terry, will be joining 46 other 16 to 25 year olds for their voyage which takes place between 10 and 17 February 2005. Their sponsorship by the University includes their flights and accommodation. Both students are planning to go to University on completion of their A levels.

Helena Pinder from the Centenary Office at the University said, "As part of our Centenary year, a number of staff, alumni and students from the University will be taking part in a tall ship challenge in March. After arranging the challenge we felt that this was something which would benefit students from local schools and colleges. The students will experience all aspects of an onboard lifestyle including an opportunity to climb to the top of the tallest mast."

The Tall Ships Youth Trust, incorporating the Sail Training Association, is a registered charity dedicated to the personal development of young people aged 16 to 25 through the crewing of Tall Ships. The voyage means that the two students will also qualify for the residential section of the Duke of Edinburgh gold award.

Notes for Editors: A tall ship is a magnificent square rigged sailing ship.
