Students rank University of Sheffield's Students' Union best in the UK
- University ranked top nationally for its Students' Union for the eighth consecutive year
- Sheffield voted number one university in Yorkshire and third best nationally for offering the best student experience
The University of Sheffield's Students' Union has been voted the best in the UK for the eighth year in a row by the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.
Results published today (Thursday 17 March 2016) also rank the University of Sheffield third out of 117 institutions nationally and first in the Yorkshire and Humber region for having the best all-round student experience.
The annual survey of 15,000 students placed the University in first place for its accommodation and joint top for social life, having a good community atmosphere and for the number of students who would recommend the University to a friend.
Sheffield, which offers more than 300 student clubs and societies, also came joint third in the ‘good extra-curricular/societies’ category.
These results reaffirm the University of Sheffield as a unique place to study and a global leader in research and teaching, as well as an institution giving students an unrivalled rich experience in a city unlike any other in the UK.
Professor Wyn Morgan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at the University of Sheffield, said: "We are delighted to be ranked so highly for our exceptional student experience once again.
“Choosing to go to a particular university is more than an investment in your career. It also provides you with a life changing opportunity to broaden your horizons, develop socially and academically and transform your future.”
He added: "Our world-class facilities are home to a vibrant community and provide a student experience that is truly enriching. We believe university life at Sheffield inspires students for the rest of their lives and we are delighted that our students agree."
While the results from this important student survey shift each year with different universities featuring among the best, Sheffield is alone in having consistently been in the top three universities for the past three years. Combined with the Student Union’s consistent top place ranking, it is clear the University of Sheffield consistently offers the very best student experience in the country.
The Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, now in its 11th year, is unique in that it looks beyond the usual definition of the student experience – comprised largely of teaching, learning, assessment and feedback – to a broader definition; one created by students themselves that includes those aspects of university life that matter most to them.
John Gill, editor of Times Higher Education, said: “Increasing competition between universities and an intense focus on the student experience are still top of the agenda for the higher education sector.
“Our survey is perfectly placed to track what this means in practice, and which universities are performing well in specific areas – whether in teaching and learning, or areas such as the standard of facilities, in which many institutions have been investing heavily.”
