Biography

I completed my B.Sc. in Biomedical Science with first class honours in 2013 for which I was awarded the IBMS President’s Prize and the Royal Society of Biology Award for academic excellence. Having completed my MRes in Medical and Biomedical Science in 2014, I then went on to study for my Ph.D. in the Department of Oncology and Metabolism under the supervision of Professor Ingunn Holen and Dr Penelope Ottewell, which I was awarded in November 2017. I am currently appointed as a post-doctoral research associate in the Holen lab working on the project "Characterisation and therapeutic targeting of dormant tumour cells in breast cancer" which is funded by Weston Park Cancer Charity.

Research Interests

My research interests focus on cellular heterogeneity and how specific sub-populations of tumour cells are responsible for chemoresistance and tumour recurrence. My Ph.D. project was focussed on developing a novel pre-clinical model for the identification and isolation of the mitotically quiescent tumour cells though to be responsible for both de novo drug resistance and the initiation of metastatic disease in breast cancer. My current project aims to integrate bioinformatics, molecular- and cell-biology methods to define the critical biological mechanisms that underpin the generation and survival of this cell population and which function to mediate survival following chemotherapy. The ultimate aim of my work is to identify novel therapeutic targets that will lead to the development of improved therapies for metastatic cancer.

I am currently a member of the British Association for Cancer Research (BACR), the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR), the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and the Royal Society of Biology (RSB).
