Post-16 External Reader Scheme

Students in Post-16 education can join the University Library as Post-16 External Readers to access a wide range of useful resources and enhance their studies. This can be particularly useful for students taking an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) or conducting independent research for a piece of coursework.

What are the benefits?

Benefits include:

  • Access to Western Bank Library and the Health Sciences Library sites (Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Northern General Hospital) during staffed hours.
  • Use of the Library’s print collections on a reference basis - thousands of books, journals and other resources that can support school or college work.
  • On-site access to some e-journals (after completion of an additional registration form when in the library)

Additionally, the Library’s Information and Digital Literacy Tutorials for pre-entry students are freely accessible online to support students in their work at school or college and in their transition to university level study and employment.

Who is eligible?

Young people aged 16 and 17 can register as External Readers from the September after they complete Year 11. Parental/carer consent will be required prior to registration.

How to Apply

Applications for library membership are done online and you will be required to upload a recent passport style photograph. Please complete the Post-16 External Reader online application form.
