Entry requirements for postgraduate studies
We are looking for strong potential students. The main measures of strength we will use are:
1. What your referees say about you
2. Your writing sample
3. Your academic record
For our MA courses you will ordinarily need a good undergraduate degree: a first or a strong 2.1 from a UK university or an equivalent grade from overseas. For the Philosophy MA, a degree in Philosophy (or Philosophy combined with something else) is best, though we will consider strong applicants with other degrees as well. For the Political Theory or Cognitive Studies MA, any relevant degree is suitable.
For admission to the PhD we ordinarily require a Master's degree in Philosophy (or a subject involving philosophy) with distinction or an equivalent grade.
If you are not a native speaker of English, you will normally need an overall IELTS score of at least 7 with a minimum of 6 in each component, or the equivalent.
For certain areas of doctoral research we might also expect further qualifications. For example, if you wanted to do scholarly research focused on specific historical texts, you might need to be competent in the original language.
Contact us if you are uncertain about any of these requirements.
