Solar Cell Technology MSc
Rhys has spent most of his career as an accountant, but his interest in renewables drew him onto our Solar Cell Technology course.

As a mature student, I came at the masters course from a slightly different direction to most of my classmates. I graduated 20 years ago with a BEng in Metallurgy from the University of Birmingham, and since then I’ve worked as an accountant, mainly in manufacturing and construction.

I’d had an interest in the renewables industry for some years, and when the first UK lockdown happened during the coronavirus pandemic, it gave me time to think about what I wanted to do with the second half of my career. I felt this was the only window I would get to reorient, so I grabbed the chance. Fortunately, as a contractor, my current employer was happy to give me the space to do this.

I was drawn to the Solar Cell Technology MSc at Sheffield precisely because it was focused on solar technology, rather than being a general renewables course, and because it emphasised practical experience and the business of solar cells. I’ve enjoyed all of the course so far. It’s been a challenge balancing my commitments, but the remote learning aspect has worked far better than I dared hope.

We got a thorough grounding in the basic physics of solar in the first semester. In the second, alongside a dissertation, we’re looking at innovation in the solar industry through case studies and by creating a business plan. This part of the course in particular appeals to me as it compels us all to step outside of an academic context, and think practically and commercially. It’s a dimension that few other renewables courses offered.

I’ve not yet finalised my business plan, but it’s likely to focus on solar applications within the automotive industry, where I have experience. I hope I can achieve some cross-over with my dissertation.

It’s an exciting time for the renewables industry nationally and globally. I’m very hopeful that at the end of the course I’ll be able to get a role in the industry, perhaps something that bridges the technical and commercial dimensions, so I can bring the full weight of my experience to bear.
