Module Summary

This is the first of two modules that constitute the first year physics core material. It provides a basic grounding in mechanics including Newton's Laws of motion and gravitation, the conservation laws of momentum and energy and collisions. The rotational dynamics of rigid bodies is covered, together with moments of inertia and angular momentum The waves course involves a description of transverse and longitudinal waves, sound, interference, Doppler effect, giving a general introduction to the phenomena of vibrations and waves with examples from mechanics and optics. Geometric optics, reflection, refraction and diffraction are covered, as well as simple optical instruments The special relativity component includes time dilation, Lorentz contraction, Lorentz transformations, and introductory relativistic energy and momentum.
