Physics and Astronomy courses

Our degrees are accredited by the Institute of Physics, which means that we cover all of the topics and training that you need to graduate into a professional physics career. Some courses are pull in expertise from other departments at the University of Sheffield, so that you can study physics in the context of a related discipline and graduate as a specialist.

All of our courses include lots of practical teaching, so that you're fully trained to complete your own research project. There is also the chance to do a Degree with Employment Experience and spend a year working in industry or, on some courses, spend a year studying physics and a top overseas institution.

– BSc, MPhys and Study Abroad

UCAS codes: F300 / F301 / F305

As well as studying the topics that every physicist needs to understand, this courses give you a wide range of modules to choose from, so that you can focus on the areas of physics that interest you most.

Physics and Astrophysics
– BSc, MPhys and Study Abroad

UCAS codes: FF35 / F3F5 / FF3M

This course is split roughly 50/50 between between Physics and Astrophysics. This means you get to do more astronomy than students at many other universities, with access to the telescopes on our roof.

Theoretical Physics
– BSc, MPhys and Study Abroad

UCAS codes: F344 / F321 / F304

On this course there is a big emphasis on developing your mathematical skills, so that you can study the conceptual basis of the theories that describe nature, and propose experiments to put them to the test.

Physics with Computer Science
– BSc and MPhys (2018 entry only)

UCAS codes: F3G4 / F3GK

This course includes modules taught by experts in the Department of Computer Science. It puts an emphasis on developing your computer programming skills and covers topics including digital logic and data-driven computing.

Physics with Medical Physics
– BSc and MPhys

UCAS codes: F350 / F371

This course includes modules taught by experts in the Faculties of Engineering, and Medicine, Dentistry and Health. You'll learn about the physics of living systems, technologies used in medicine, and clinical engineering. If you do the MPhys degree, you'll get to do a placement in industry or at a local hospital in your fourth year.

Physics with Philosophy
– BSc and MPhys

UCAS codes: FV35 / F3V5

This course includes modules taught by experts in the Department of Philosophy, so that you can place the fundamental theories of physics in a meaningful conceptual context. You'll have the freedom to study any of the modules that are available to undergraduate Philosophy students – from ethics, to feminism, to Hegel.

Chemical Physics (2018 entry only)

UCAS code: F335

via Chemistry

This course draws equally from the Department of Physics and Astronomy and Sheffield's Department of Chemistry to cover many areas where the two subjects meet, such as nanotechnology and polymers.
