Undergraduate student profiles

We asked some of our students and graduates to share their experiences of studying physics and astronomy at the University of Sheffield, and to tell us what they've ended up doing with their degree.

Bridget Marchington

I have nurtured my analytical mindset and learnt new skills that are invaluable in this career

Bridget Marchington Physics BSc and Astrophysics MSc

Bridget followed her undergraduate physics degree with our Astrophysics MSc course, and is now applying her analytics skills on a graduate training scheme at Natwest.

Mateusz Duda

All the different modules which I have been able to take have been extremely interesting

Mateusz Duda Theoretical Physics MPhys

Mateusz got involved in physics at the cutting edge of research by doing a project in our Quantum Information Laboratory.

Louise Webb

Sheffield has given me the support I need to take steps I didn't think were possible at the start of my degree

Louise Webb Theoretical Physics MPhys

Louise has enjoyed being able to focus on the subjects she enjoys the most, and that will be most relevant to her career.

Laura Stephenson

I want to use physics to help people and make a real difference to their lives

Laura Stephenson Physics with Medical Physics MPhys

Laura is enjoying the combination of physics, medical physics and bioengineering that she gets on her course.

Lauren Lewis

Sheffield's student-centred approach confirmed it was the university I wanted to study at

Lauren Lewis Physics and Astrophysics BSc

Lauren expanded her passion for physics during her degree, studying topics that range from stellar structure to galaxy formation and evolution, and from special relativity to astronomical spectroscopy.

Jothi Venkatesh

My degree gave me confidence in my physics abilities

Jothi Venkatesh Physics with Medical Physics MPhys

Jothi completed her Medical Physics degree in Sheffield and secured a place on the competitive NHS Scientist Training Programme, where she is training to become a clinical scientist.

Aspen Fenzl

My friends back home were amazed when I said I got to work in a research grade lab in just my third year

Aspen Fenzl Theoretical Physics MPhys

Aspen came from the USA to study physics here in Sheffield, and has found our Theoretical Physics course to be the perfect blend of physics, maths (and a little programming).

Xiaoyu Sun

At the University of Sheffield I made friends who are friendly and supportive

Xiaoyu Sun Materials Physics BSc

Xiaoyu became interested in materials physics because of how it can be applied to everyday life, and during her time in Sheffield got to learn advanced experimental techniques.

Anna Sheard

Developing my skills on placement at IBM

Anna Sheard Physics with a Year in Industry MPhys

After talking to family and friends about placements, and undertaking some initial research into the company, Anna applied to IBM and became a Service Management Analyst.

Kyle Young

The most appealing thing to me was the high student satisfaction rate

Kyle Young BSc Physics and Astrophysics

Kyle was attracted to Sheffield thanks to our high rates of student satisfaction. Now he's enjoying the range of astrophysics topics we cover on his degree programme.
