Funding and financial support

Current funding

We often get asked by students if they are any funds they can access whilst they are undertaking a placement.

When you’re undertaking a placement we would expect that most students will be paid for the work they’re undertaking and therefore there isn’t always additional funds to the wage you’ll be receiving.

If you are undertaking work experience that is unpaid you should clearly understand when this is legal and not legal and understand your employment rights. Many students choose to undertake work experience unpaid because they want a period of work experience which they feel will help them progress towards their chosen career. There is a difference between volunteering and paid work which has contractual obligations and there are circumstances when you should be receiving the national minimum wage.

There are occasions when additional funding may be available:

  • Placements in sectors and companies which are difficult to acquire due to the nature of the industry or the size of a company
  • Some placements may incur higher costs than normal such as those overseas.
  • Students whose circumstances make it less likely to take part in placements, such as those from a low income background.

If you are undertaking a placement year, then your tuition fees are substantially reduced for the year that you are on placement (see fees and funding) - you can still apply for a student loan to cover the cost of this fee. You may also be eligible for a maintenance loan, even if you are earning a salary whilst you are undertaking your placement.

Additional funding may be available via scholarships depending on your personal circumstances and course. You can find out more about University scholarships and if you are eligible, you can apply for funding without arranging a placement.

Below are some examples of funding specifically available to students if you are studying at the University of Sheffield.

Work Experience Bursaries

We have a number of bursaries available to support students from less well-off backgrounds to undertake unpaid or low paid work experience during the Easter or Summer vacation.

We can provide up to six weeks support for work with a voluntary sector organisation or small to medium enterprise (below 250 employees), or up to two weeks with a large employer.

Applications are invited from UK/home undergraduates who receive a full maintenance bursary from the University based on a household income of under £25,000, and who meet at least one from a list of criteria for groups under-represented in higher education. Final year students are ONLY eligible for funding for placements during the Easter vacation.

Applications for this scheme generally open in Semester 2 of each year but to find out more about the scheme, including types of placements and student eligibility, visit the Discover Your Future website.

Postgraduate Research Experience Programme

The Postgraduate Researcher Experience Programme (PREP) has been established to enable researchers to add to their experience. It encourages you to get the experience, information, training, advice or insights you need. It does this by providing an award of between £100 and £1000 that can be used to pay for travel, accommodation, training fees or to provide a small salary to cover your time. It is your responsibility to set up the experience or create the opportunity but if you can do that, the scheme can cover some or all of the costs. More information is available at http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/careers/prep or If you have any questions about the scheme email prep@sheffield.ac.uk
