Summer placements #TakeUSwithyou17

Each year students from the University of Sheffield undertake summer placements across the globe, in a variety of different industries.

Summer is approaching and if you’re a first, second or penultimate year student about to undertake part in a summer placement or any kind of work experience this summer we want to know.

Working over the summer will be exciting and perhaps daunting but we want to make sure it’s rewarding for you too. Let us know that you're going on summer placement and we’ll keep you informed prior to the summer about things you should know before you go. We’ll also keep in touch with you over the summer, reminding you how to make the most of your time on placement so that when you return to University you have lots of contacts and can use your experience to distinguish yourself above others. If you need help, while you’re away from University over the summer – we’ll be here to help too.

We’ll also let you know about how you can win up to £100 of Students' Union vouchers as a summer placement student and let you know about bursaries we can offer to students which may help financially this summer.

Registering that you're going on summer placement is really easy, click onto the placement database, you may need to sign up if you haven't already. Once you have done this please click on the orange tab (#TakeUSwithyou) which will allow you to register your summer placement.

Placement Database

Register on the placement database; tell us about your preferences in terms of placement type, duration, location, so we can better support and signpost you to relevant opportunities.

We love to hear what students are doing over the summer and we're already getting feedback from some of our students about the work experience placements they'll be doing. We're starting to build a great picture for the University, but we really need everyone to contribute.

Over the past two years we've had some great feedback from our students who have gone onto do amazing things - take a look at our video here to see some of them.

Going overseas this summer?

In 2016 we had students travel all over the world on summer placement and we appreciate that finding and going on a placement abroad can be a bit trickier than staying in the UK.

Our friends in Global Opportunities and Exchanges helped us to support students travelling overseas for work experience by offering them the chance to receive a £500 bursary. For more information and how to apply please visit our Overseas Placement page

What is a summer placement?

  • Summer placements are very varied and can take place in the UK or overseas, be structured or non-structured and take place over a range of lengths from a couple of weeks - 12 weeks
  • Advertised summer placements are sometimes referred to as internships; these are usually structured 8 - 12 week placements within a company, taking place between June and August.
  • Most advertised summer placements are aimed at 2nd year students, but more organisations are now offering opportunities for 1st years.

Why should I do a summer placement?

  • Experience the world of work
  • Gain insight into a particular industry or role.
  • Decide if this is the right career path for you.
  • Apply the theoretical knowledge that you have gained during your degree.
  • Develop transferable skills and enhance your CV.
  • Take on real responsibility and increase your confidence.
  • Network and gain valuable references and contacts.
  • Combine different experiences through a mix of shorter placements.

Many students also find they are offered a graduate position, or further work experience, as a result of their summer placement.

How do I find a summer placement?

Placement opportunities can be found in all kinds of places; for example, the University’s own vacancy advertising service Career Connect, accessible via MUSE; employer websites and through speculative applications.

What do I do about applications?

The application process for summer placements can vary from organisation to organisation; you might be asked for a cover letter and CV or to complete an application form. You may be required to attend an interview or assessment centre.

For more advice about applications have a look at the ‘Applying for placements’ webpage.
