Profile

Dimitrios Argyroulis completed an undergraduate degree in International and European Studies at the University of Piraeus, Greece (2002-2006) and took a Master of Arts in Comparative Politics (with distinction) at the University of York, UK (2007-2008). His Masters dissertation focused on the democratic legitimacy of the EU and the WTO. After his studies he remained close to academia and undertook further research training in foreign and European policy at the Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence of the University of Athens.

Dimitrios worked as a trainee (Blue Book) at the European Commission’s Secretariat-General in the Unit: Parliamentary Questions (March 2012 – July 2012). There he enhanced his knowledge of European affairs by attending and reporting on Plenary and Committee meetings of the European Parliament, as well as the Council’s General Affairs Working Group (GAG). Also, he provided political analyses of parliamentary questions contributing to the President’s briefing dossier. Before starting his doctoral research he was working as a Parliamentary Advisor at the Hellenic Parliament.

Dimitrios is seminar tutor for the Level 2 module “POL206 – The Politics and Government of the European Union” in 2017-2018. He also taught the same module in 2016-2017.

He is a member of the Academic Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) since 2012.

PhD Research

PhD Title: ECOFIN and the Post-crisis Institutionalisation of European Economic Governance: A Sociological Institutionalist Approach

Supervisors: Professor Simon Bulmer and Dr Owen Parker

Summary:
The research project falls within the broader discipline of European Economic and Monetary Integration. Its particular area of interest lies in the institutional evolution of the Economic and Monetary Union’s (EMU) economic pillar after the financial crisis. The new legislative framework includes the so-called “Six-Pack” of five Regulations and one Directive, the “Two-Pack” of two Regulations, as well as the intergovernmental Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union comprising the Fiscal Compact. The research asks what light ECOFIN’s socially constructed norms and economic policy beliefs shed on the institutional developments in EMU’s fiscal and macroeconomic governance. To answer this question the thesis employs the framework of sociological institutionalism to analyse institutional adaptations as a result of social appropriateness. The research applies the methods of close process-tracing and elite interviewing.

The project is funded by the University’s Faculty of Social Sciences. Fieldwork expenses are covered by a joint UACES/ James Madison Charitable Trust Scholarship.
