Research excellence
The quality of research in UK university departments is assessed in the Research Excellence Framework (REF). The REF is a peer-review exercise carried out by experts from universities, industry and commerce.
In the 2014 REF, the results are presented by subject area. Research activity in each subject area is graded on a scale of 1* – 4* as follows:
4* World-leading
3* Internationally excellent
2* Recognised internationally
1* Recognised nationally
99% of Sheffield staff who took part in the REF were involved in internationally recognised, internationally excellent or world-leading research.
