Before proceeding to Level 3, a student will attain a satisfactory standard in an Engineering Applications Course, the arrangements being subject to the approval of the Head of Department.
A student must normally achieve a weighted mean grade of 60 or above at Level 2 in order to proceed to the Year in Industry, progression being at the discretion of the Head of Mechanical Engineering. A student who fails to progress may be permitted to become instead a student for the Degree of MEng Mechanical Engineering (MECU001) or the Degree of BEng Mechanical Engineering (MECU002).
A student will be responsible for securing a suitable industrial placement in order to take MEC397. The appropriateness of the placement will be determined by the Head of Mechanical Engineering. A student who fails to obtain a suitable placement will instead be required to become a student for the Degree of MEng Mechanical Engineering (MECU001).
MEC397 requires that a student will spend a minimum of 38 weeks working in an industrial establishment, the arrangements being subject to the approval of the Head of Mechanical Engineering. The Year in Industry will be assessed on (a) written reflections on skills-based placement journal; (b) two written reports; and (c) a post-placement presentation. No grades will be awarded for the Year in Industry which will be assessed on a pass/fail basis. A student who fails to satisfy these requirements may be permitted by the Faculty to become instead a student for the Degree of MEng in Mechanical Engineering (MECU001).
A student must satisfy the requirements of the General Regulations for First Degrees as to progression in order to continue as a student for the Degree of MEng in Mechanical Engineering with a Year in Industry (MECU014). A student who fails to satisfy these requirements may be permitted by the Faculty to become instead a student for the Degree of BEng in Mechanical Engineering with a Year in Industry (MECU015). In this instance, in addition to satisfying the requirements of the General Regulations for First Degrees as the Final Examination for the Degree of BEng in Mechanical Engineering with a Year in Industry (MECU015), the student must achieve a grade of 40 or above in the individual element of the Group Design Project (MEC307). A student who does not achieve a grade of 40 or above in the individual element of the Group Design Project (MEC307) at the first attempt will be ineligible for the award of a Degree with Honours.
A student must pass MEC401 (Individual Project) at the first attempt in order to be eligible for the award of the Degree of MEng in Mechanical Engineering. A student who fails to satisfy this requirement may be awarded the Degree of BEng in Mechanical Engineering with a Year in Industry (MECU015).
