Description

This module provides an insight into the UK constitution and the way in which the power of the state is regulated by law. It will provide students with an understanding of the fundamental principles of the UK constitution such as the Rule of Law, separation of powers and parliamentary sovereignty. It will also consider the impacts of developments such as the Human Rights act 1998 and devolution of power from Westminster to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Individual rights such as freedom of the person and freedom of expression are also explored. The module then builds upon these themes and provides students with an understanding of how governmental power is controlled and regulated by the law. The understanding of the operation of judicial review is a central component of the module, but other means of resolving grievances, such as tribunals and complaints procedures, are also considered.
