Course description

You'll spend your third year studying mechanical engineering at a leading university in the USA or Canada. This course combines core mechanical engineering with the chance to experience a different culture and develop international business skills.

In years one and two, you'll study the fundamentals of mechanical engineering, mathematics and management. Modules include applied dynamics, mechanics of fluids, mechanics of solids, applied thermodynamics, mechanical behaviour of materials, and electrical and electronic engineering.

In your third year in North America, you'll study an agreed set of mechanical engineering courses. These mirror our modules at the same level. Your final year contains optional modules and an extended individual project, which means you can specialise in your area of interest.

All our students also take the Global Engineering Challenge. Working with students from other engineering courses, you'll have to find creative solutions to problems. The project looks at challenges faced by communities throughout the world. It's designed to develop you as a professional engineer and get you thinking about sustainable solutions.

The Diamond

Our courses cover all aspects of engineering - from design and innovation, to manufacturing - as well as the fundamental scientific principles underpinning them. We'll also help you to develop the additional skills you'll need to become a successful mechanical engineer. This includes team-working and effective communication, as well as problem-solving, which you will also develop during our faculty projects weeks; Global Engineering Challenge, and Engineering: You're Hired!

Our students are involved in a huge range of extra-curricular activities, from building single-seat racing cars to designing and manufacturing miniature locomotives, drones, energy efficient vehicles and rockets.

All our courses give you the chance to work on real engineering projects with our partners in industry.

What our graduates do

A number of our graduates go into industry - particularly manufacturing, transport and power generation - with many finding employment with prestigious companies such as Rolls-Royce, Arup, Jaguar Land Rover and Network Rail. Others have gone on to work for engineering consultancies, in both technical and managerial roles. Outside of engineering, our graduates have transferred their skills. For example, some have become teachers and charity workers, while others have started their own business.

All our courses are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and this MEng meets all the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

University open days
There are four open days every year, usually in June, July, September and October. You can talk to staff and students, tour the campus and see inside the accommodation.
