Project title: Effect of climate change and rainfall variability on urban sediment behaviour (WP4)

Objectives:

  • To develop and test high resolution sediment erosion and wash-off models for a specific site and describe uncertainty in the modelling of pollutant peaks through local urban drainage conduits, due to the uncertainty in rainfall estimation.
Tasks and methodology: Mine existing data available in the ITN catchments for unusual event combinations and model the influence of these events on urban sediment behaviour on a small scale, to inform larger scale integrated quality models. ESR11 will be seconded to EAWAG to collaborate on effect of small urban scale spatial variability and climate change on input uncertainty, and to University if Coimbra to investigate effect of accounting for small scale variability of rainfall and 2D rainfall runoff modelling on the overall uncertainty in urban runoff.
Results: Practical advice on the optimum spatial and temporal resolution of rainfall estimate for the urban component of an integrated water quality model, in order to minimise uncertainty (D4.3). Improved high resolution sediment erosion and wash-off models suitable for 2D integrated catchment models (D2.4). Report describing on potential effects of different climate change scenarios (D6.8). Journal publications on new sediment erosion and wash-off models, influence of spatial rainfall variation of erosion/wash-off models and effect of this on integrated models, potential climate change impacts.
Dissemination: Manual and guidelines describing advice on optimum rainfall resolution, improved models, report on effects of climate change, journal papers, two activities/year as MC Ambassador. Annual conference attendance.
Planned secondments: To EAWAG (3 months) Study effect of small urban scale spatial variability and climate change on input uncertainty. To Coimbra (3 months) investigate combined effect of accounting for small scale variability of rainfall & 2D rainfall runoff modelling on overall uncertainty.
