Registration is an important step in becoming a student at the University of Sheffield. Registration is the formal contract between you and the University. It enables you to use the libraries and computing facilities, receive your University Membership Card (UCard) and have your student loan payments initiated.

Have passport scanned and checked
You may have already scanned your passport in pre-registration however we still need to check it in person

Different courses offer different options for module choice. If all your modules are CORE then you won’t have any choice. You may be able to choose from a list of APPROVED modules and you might also have UNRESTRICTED choice.

Unrestricted Modules: Octagon

Erasmus/Study Abroad students please collect your module forms from SSID on Level 3, Students' Union.

Qualifications Verification

Before you register your entry qualifications must be checked. You will receive an email from the Admissions Service before Intro Week (from shefapply@sheffield.ac.uk) if you need to have your qualifications verified. If you receive this email you must attend verification of qualifications before your register.

When you attend Verification of Qualifications you must bring the original certificates of the qualifications you included in your application to the University.

Module Enrolment Event

Undergraduate & Visiting Students

This is where you select unrestricted modules, you must have selected 120 credits in total, and have had these authorised by the department which will be teaching the module(s). You will need to take your Module Form to the Octagon Centre.

You will be advised at your departmental meeting whether you need to attend module enrolment.

Erasmus/Study Abroad students please collect your module forms from SSID on Level 3, Students' Union.

Postgraduate Taught Students

Graduate Students do not need to attend the Module Enrolment Event in the Octagon Centre. Be sure to have your choice of modules approved by your department before attending to register. A full-time student on a Masters degree programme must take 180 credits, on a Diploma programme 120 credits and on a Certificate programme 60 credits.

Postgraduate Research Students

All new research students must attend the University-wide induction session on 2nd October 2018, where you will be addressed by the Deputy Vice President for Research and will receive advice about the Doctoral Development Programme (DDP), as well as other information essential to your programme.

Preparing for Module Choice

Confirm your identity

We require that all new students confirm their identity in person at the Registration Event. You will not be allowed to register before this step has been completed. For this, we require you to bring identity documentation. Your academic record will reflect your name as shown on your passport (for all international students). For all other students, please bring with you one form of identification from the following list:

  • Passport (preferred)
  • EU National Identity Card
  • Identity Card for Foreign Nationals (ICFN) / Biometric Residence Permit
  • Driving licence - (UK)(Full or Provisional). Isle of Man/Channel Islands; either photocard (only valid with associated counterpart licence, except Jersey) or paper.
  • Birth Certificate (UK & Channel Islands) issued within 12 months of birth (full or short form acceptable including those issued by UK authorities overseas, such as Embassies, High Commissions and HM Forces).
  • Adoption Certificate (UK & Channel Islands).

The main Registration Event takes place during Intro Week (Monday 17 to Friday 21 September 2018) in Sports Hall 1 at:

The Registration Timetable

Pay your Tuition Fee You will not be able to pay your tuition fees at the Registration Event; you must arrange to pay your fees in advance as part of your pre-registration tasks. More information here
Provide a sponsor letter If your studies are being sponsored by your employer, an external organisation or an Embassy, you will need to upload a letter from your sponsor to the University as one of your pre-registration actions. If your fee is £10,000 or more and your sponsor is new to the University, your sponsor will be subject to a credit check. More information here
Collect your UCard

Your UCard (University Membership UCard) carries your photograph and gives you access to the University Library, Information Commons, University residences and the Students' Union. You also need to use your UCard to borrow books from the Library and to use University printers and photocopiers. For a full list of services available, please see our Corporate Information and Computing Services (CiCS).

You should have uploaded a copy of a passport photograph of yourself into your pre-registration account as part of your pre-arrival steps. Your UCard will then be ready for you to collect at Registration.

University Health Service Registration

You must attend University Health Service registration and demonstrate that you are in a satisfactory state of health in order to complete your Registration at the University. Details of when to attend can be found in the Registration Timetable.

On arrival at Sheffield you should have already completed the online Health questionaire as part of your pre-arrival steps. These questionnaires are screened at the University Health Service and your immunisation status is also reviewed and any necessary recommendations for vaccinations made. You will be offered an appointment with a doctor or nurse, if necessary, following screening.

Registration with the University Health Service, which is a comprehensive National Health Service General Practice, will give you the opportunity to register for the full NHS medical care with doctors dedicated to the care and support of young people undertaking higher education.

If you have limited mobility or you are a wheelchair user, please contact the Student Administration Service before attending Registration, preferably a few days before coming to the University. If necessary we can assist you with any alternative arrangements that may be necessary.
