What we do

The Regional Engagement and Partnerships team supports the academic delivery of partnerships, regional engagement and Vice-Chancellor led-collaborations where institutional coordination can add value. The team also leads on activities to improve the vibrancy and cultural life of the city, the implementation of the University's IIKE (Impact, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange) Strategy, and support for academics to engage the public with research, as well as using our Innovation Centre to incubate early-stage businesses and start-ups.

The team is led by Dr Sarah Want, Director of Regional Engagement and Partnerships, and Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City and Culture.

Our department is structured into a number of teams that work in a collaborative and integrated way to achieve results.

City and Culture

The team delivers a programme of activities which aims to enhance the cultural vibrancy of Sheffield through a programme of projects and events such as Off the Shelf, DocFest and regeneration projects such as LoveSquare, Castlegate and ReNew. All these activities help to build Sheffield's role as a magnet city - a great place to work, live and study.

Economic Development

The team works closely with external stakeholders and organisations to drive innovation, productivity and growth across the Sheffield City Region. We also co-ordinate the Managing Directors' (MD) Club, the Sheffield City Region's Science and Innovation Board, and the Innovation Centre.

Partnerships and Knowledge Exchange

The team provides support and information to help academics build research partnerships with external contacts and strategic partners as well as providing dedicated account management to partners such as Siemens; helping to drive and grow our research collaborations. The team also implements the IIKE strategy and oversees the allocation of external funding to support partnerships and knowledge exchange.

Public Engagement

The team help academic staff across the University to deliver creative and collaborative ways to engage the public with our research through a programme of public engagement festivals and events, such as Festival of the Mind. The team also provide masterclasses for staff and students who are looking for training and support to undertake public engagement activity.

Working closely with Corporate Communications, the team provides the narrative and communications activities to ensure that the University gains maximum reputational benefit from the University's partnership and engagement activities.
