Doctoral Academy Committee

Terms of Reference

The Committee reports to the University's Research and Innovation Committee, and its responsibilities are:

  • To advise the Research and Innovation Committee (RIC) on matters relating to strategy and policy in respect of Doctoral Research Student matters.
  • To recommend principles regarding the development of the Doctoral Research Student frameworks as they relate to the student experience and output (e.g. Centres for Doctoral Training, block grants, joint degrees etc.)
  • To provide advice to bespoke groups preparing significant institutional bids for funding Doctoral Research Students (such as CDTs)
  • To advise on the national and international environments as they relate to Doctoral Research Students including reviewing current key trends and strategic developments in the Government's economic and societal impact and skills agendas and their implications for sustaining the competitiveness of the University's Doctoral Research Student offering.
  • To seek to influence the national and international debate about the purpose and value of doctoral research, through a combination of proactive lobbying and targeted networking and response to externally-driven requests for information and/or support.
  • To provide strategic direction and focus with respect to Doctoral Research Student recruitment and admissions with the focus on growing the number and quality of Sheffield’s doctoral researchers (growth with quality ).
  • To act as a point of institutional focus for external representation and funder-relationships.
  • Benchmark the competitiveness of Sheffield’s position on doctoral research (numbers, quality) and review the degree to which initiatives and actions implemented in support of the strategic priorities are having a beneficial impact on sustaining the competitiveness of our position.
  • To receive reports and recommendations from relevant Faculty committees.
  • To oversee the implementation of any recommendations from University RIC or Task and Finish Groups.
  • To receive and consider reports from the Learning and Teaching Committee and the Quality and Scrutiny and Enhancement and Strategy Sub-Committees where they relate to Doctoral Research Student provision.
  • To recommend ways that the University’s Doctoral Research Student scholarship budget is used to both maximise recruitment and fit with the wider research strategy.
  • To provide oversight and advice to bespoke groups preparing significant institutional bids for funding (such as CDTs).
  • To undertake strategic policy development in respect of opportunities for strategic connectivity between Doctoral Research Students and Postgraduate Taught Students.
