Writing Advisory Service

The Writing Advisory Service (WAS) is a service provided by the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) to help improve the writing skills of both home and international students. WAS is an hour long appointment one-to-one with a specialist writing tutor (there is also a distance learner’s online option).

WAS appointments can benefit doctoral students who are concerned to improve their structure, logical linking, signposting, grammar, academic style etc. You can ask the tutor to focus on areas of particular concern to you. Please note that the tutor can only look at a short section of your writing (usually about 5 pages). They cannot read and respond to a whole thesis chapter in one hour. Also, the teacher will give advice to help you improve and correct your own work rather than making corrections for you: this is not a proofreading service, and the teacher may not point out every error. Nevertheless, many doctoral students find it helpful to have an extra reader for parts of their thesis who is especially focused on the effective use of language.

WAS appointments must be booked online HERE. Students can book up to 6 appointments during the academic year depending on availability (for example 3 in the Autumn semester and 3 in the Spring) but you may be able to book more appointments in special circumstances.
