The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey 2019

What is the PRES?

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey is a national survey of doctoral students, co-ordinated by the Higher Education Academy. The University of Sheffield is taking part and the survey begins here on Monday 4 March 2019 and closes on Monday 1st April 2019.

Why should I take part in PRES 2019?

This is the chance for doctoral research students at TUoS to tell us what they think about their experience of doing a PhD here, so we can address issues and keep doing what is valued. It is an opportunity to say what they think is going well and what they think could be improved.

Here at the University of Sheffield we want to encourage as many eligible doctoral research students as possible to complete the online survey and to give their feedback. The more students who complete the survey, the more representative it will be. The survey is open to:

  • Fully registered students who joined us from 2010 onwards.
  • Students who have at least 6 months experience of a research programme
  • Students who have yet to submit their thesis

Doctoral research students will receive an email on 4 March from pres@sheffield.ac.uk with a link to the survey.

The survey is confidential and all identifying information will be removed by the PRES team before the results of the survey are disseminated within the University. Individual departments will receive the results for their department, and these will be discussed at Faculty PGR Committees, before feeding into a University-wide discussion at the University PGR Committee (UPGRC), chaired by Professor Lorraine Maltby (Deputy Vice President for Research and Innovation). In this way your feedback will inform future University policies, including the five PGR workstreams. Students can continue to feed into PGR policy development on an ongoing basis and receive updates on current initiatives via their departmental and Faculty forum reps.

What will be asked?

The survey questions are broken down into the following areas:
• supervision
• resources
• research culture
• progress and assessment
• research skills
• professional development
• opportunities
• overall experience
• motivations
• demographic details

A 'thank you' from US

Each student who completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win one of three £50 vouchers for an appropriate retailer of their choice. There will also be a prize for the academic department with the highest response rate.
