Information for scholarship award holders

If you have been awarded a scholarship, you may have queries about your payments, additional funding available, or what happens if you need to take a leave of absence.

Terms and conditions

Follow the links below for information relating to your sponsor, including funder expectations, how to apply for any additional funding allowances, and what to do if you need to take a leave of absence.

Payment of scholarships

If your scholarship includes a maintenance allowance this will be paid in advance directly into your bank account in four equal quarterly instalments. All scholarship maintenance payments are exempt from income tax and National Insurance contributions.

You will be asked to provide your bank details at the pre-registration stage. If you haven't yet provided your bank details, or need to update them, then follow the instructions on the Finance webpages. You can change your bank details up to five working days prior to the payment due date.

Payment dates

Maintenance for months: Payment date:
October/November/December 1 October (or as soon as possible after registration)
January/February/March 1 January
April/May/June 1 April
July/August/September 1 July

The above dates apply to those students who register or re-register for 1 October. If you are a cross-sessional student and have a different registration date, then your payment dates may differ.

Please note that in order to receive payment you will be required to have full registration status on the payment date. It may take up to 3 working days from the dates above for funds to be available in your bank account. If you do not receive a payment when you expect to, or the amount differs from what you expect to receive, please contact paymentstostudents@sheffield.ac.uk including your registration number with your query.

Payment rates

The standard UK Research Council stipend for 2021/22 is £15,609 and all University Scholarships paid at this standard rate will be paid at the same level. Part-time scholarships are normally paid at 50%. Some scholarships may have different stipend levels and this will be detailed in your scholarship award letter.
