Supervisor Search Tool 

What is it?

The Research Supervisor Search Tool enables prospective PhD students to find supervisors based upon their research interests.  It is available on the main Prospective Postgraduate website.

All academic staff have a profile in the tool.

Why a keyword search?

The search tool allows individuals to be found based upon their research expertise. This is helpful for students seeking potential PGR supervisors, for external parties and other University staff seeking research expertise.

How does it work?

  • Each staff record within the tool contains information taken from staff web pages, as well as manually added keywords.
  • The keywords are heavily prioritised when a search is run, and therefore to work well it relies on them being accurate and specific.
  • Academics will receive an occasional automated email to ask them to check and update their keywords to reflect any new research interests.
How to check and amend a profile

1. Log in to Muse then follow this link:

2. Select your department from the drop down box (Diagram below a) and click 'update' (Diagram below b)

3. Scroll down the page and find the desired record in the table and click 'edit' the in the right hand column of the table. (Diagram above c).

4. Check and amend the information in the record. Add many general and specific relevant key words separated by commas.

5. Save the record once finished.

How to add a new record

1. Log in to Muse then follow this link:

2. Click 'Add New Supervisor to...' (Denoted by the red arrow in the diagram below)

3. You will be presented with a form. Fill in the form to create a record (see below).

  • First find your name by adding free text to the surname box and hitting the search button. If your name does not appear or is incorrect please contact HR and have your staff record updated. You will not be able to create a record until your HR record is up to date.
  • Add many general and specific relevant key words separated by commas.
  • Select your department and add a link to your profile page.
  • Add other information as desired.

4. Save the record once finished (See the diagram below).
