Employability and career development

Postgraduate study at Sheffield provides you with opportunities to develop advanced knowledge and skills and to help you progress your career.

The Careers Service

The Careers Service is here to support you with your personal and career development throughout your course and for up to three years after you leave university. As a postgraduate student with an intensive and relatively short course ahead, it is important to start your career planning early. To help you explore options and get started with your career development, you will have access to a wide range of resources and talks from specialist careers staff as well as employers.

Our team can help you reflect on the skills you develop through your course, work experience and extracurricular activities to support you in finding part time jobs, placements, and transition to graduate employment or further study, such as a PhD, depending on what you want to do next.

We have recently developed many new online resources including a selection of digital learning pathways on a variety of career related topics, which you can find on our website. Our specialist Postgraduate Careers Service pages will also support you in your career planning.

Develop your skills using mySkills

mySkills is a simple online tool to support your understanding of your skills and manage your personal development. It will help you set development goals, record activities and become more self-aware through regular reflection. As a postgraduate student you will have deepened your skills and experiences, and will need a way to promote these effectively to potential employers. mySkills can support you to do this by enabling you to record and reflect on development activities you have undertaken during your time at university, showing how this connects with transferable skills of interest to employers.
