ONLINE Asynchronous Introduction to Stata

ONLINE Asynchronous Course: Monday, 13th September up to and including Friday, 8th October (approximately 8-15 hours)

This course provides a basic overview of the uses and functions of the statistical software Stata, which includes:

  • Understanding the Stata interface(s)
  • Reading in data, and data manipulation
  • Help files and do files
  • Basic statistical analyses and graph production

After this course you should be able to:

  • Know the different windows, benefits and limitations of Stata
  • Import data and plot graphs in Stata
  • Create/ modify variables when needed
  • Utilise basic commands to analyse your data
  • Know how to proceed if/when you get stuck in the future

Who should attend this course?

This course is aimed at individuals with little or no experience in Stata (or those who have only used the drop-down system within Stata and wish to transition to the coding language). The delivery of this course is through live demonstration, with intermittent practical activities throughout the course to reinforce understanding. A basic knowledge of statistics is advantageous, but not essential.

Course Delivery

This course will be delivered purely online, in a non-live (asynchronous) method, so you can learn at your own pace and revisit elements when desired, before moving on to the next section. The course is split into numerous pre-recorded videos to make the content more digestible, and structured into 6 main sections:

  • Section 1: General (and gentle) introduction, the Stata windows, log files, do files and reading in data; 
  • Section 2: Data manipulation, creating and deleting variables, applying variable labels, working with dates; 
  • Section 3: Descriptive statistics for continuous and categoric variables; 
  • Section 4: Graphs, scatterplots, line graphs, bar graphs, histograms, dot plots, Graph Editor; 
  • Section 5: Significance tests, parametric and non-parametric tests; 
  • Section 6: The drop-down system, installing new packages and what to do when you get stuck.

There are practical examples to attempt where relevant, with full demonstrated solutions to each of these. It is anticipated the amount of time taken to complete the course will take between 8 to 15 hours depending on your prior experience with statistical software, and the level of engagement with the course exercises.

Course delegates will have access to a 4 week period of support with the course content through email/ updated course website FAQs, so you will not be left stuck without assistance during the course period.

Access to Stata is not free, however many institutes (e.g. Universities) have access to a version of Stata as standard. If you do not have access to a Stata license, you can download a free trial version that will cover the length of this short course. If this is required, you will be provided information when you register; please do not try to access this beforehand or you may not have access to the software for the full course period.
