Entry criteria: Standard PhD

To be considered for entry to a standard PhD programme you need to meet the following minimum entry criteria:

• Upper Second Class (2.1) Honours degree
• Master's degree - merit
• IELTS 7.0 (with 6.5 in each component) or equivalent gained within the past two years, if your first language is not English.

Exceptionally, we will consider applications that narrowly miss the above requirements which demonstrate strong academic potential in the research proposal.

You will need to upload evidence of meeting these criteria when you apply.

You also need to supply:

• a detailed research proposal (see our guidance on writing a proposal). We have identified a number of potential research projects. You may also submit proposals for projects that are not on the list. You will also need to identify and approach potential supervisors to discuss your proposed research and get their provisional agreement to supervise your project. You should then name them as your preferred supervisor(s) in your online application.
• two recent academic references from academic staff at institutions where you have studied. If you have been out of education for some time we will accept a reference from your current employer if they can comment on your suitability to study for a higher research degree.

These will be assessed along with the rest of your application to consider your suitability to undertake postgraduate research.

Entry criteria: MD programme

To be considered for entry to the MD programme you must be:

• a holder of an MBChB degree from the University of Sheffield of at least three years' standing or
• a recognised graduate in Medicine, with a qualification which confers eligibility for full or provisional registration with the General Medical Council, and a full or part time member of the established or honorary staff of the University of Sheffield or
• a recognised graduate in Medicine of at least three years' standing with a qualification which confers eligibility for full or provisional registration with the General Medical Council, and a Higher Degree from the University of Sheffield or another University.
• IELTS 7.0 (with 6.5 in each component) or equivalent gained within the past two years, if your first language is not English.

You also need to supply:

• a detailed research proposal

Before applying, you need to contact your chosen research group to explore research opportunities and find a supervisor. At least one of your supervisors must be a member of academic staff within the department. 

You will need guaranteed funding for your proposed research. Funding should cover

• your living expenses and those of any dependents with you
• tuition fees. If you are a member of staff (established or honorary) you can apply as a staff candidate and will not normally pay tuition fees.
