CBE6195: Foundations of Leadership & Teamwork (online)
The course investigates the issues of becoming an effective leader and developing effective teamwork within health service providing organizations, critical for their success.
The Foundations of Leadership and Teamwork course looks at individual, team, and organizational leadership. It lays the groundwork for examining and developing students’ own personal leadership capabilities, whatever their responsibilities are within a hospital or other health/society oriented organizations.
The course focuses on horizontal and vertical leadership, team building and performance and team leadership including the critical topic of ethics. It involves interactive and mixed-method format, building this way personal skills through team projects, class discussions, problem-solving, case studies as well as role-playing.
The course aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge to develop their individual skills in the healthcare sector through:
- Applying theories and concepts of leadership and teamwork
- Applying theories and concepts to improve their leadership skills
- Appreciating the importance of teamwork
- Developing effective communication
By the end of the unit, a candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- Critical understanding of theories and concepts of leadership and teamwork in organizations
- Understanding of the techniques and practical understanding on how to apply theories and concepts to improve leadership skills
- Critical awareness of the importance of teamwork and development of the skills for building effective teams
- Development of skills in effective and professional communication
- Development of skills in systematic and efficient managing of conflict issues.
The course is taught completely online. This offers flexibility and enables the students to study at their own pace and from any location, allowing students to fit their studies around part or full-time employment. The course will be delivered via the University of Sheffield's ‘My Online Learning Environment (MOLE)’. MOLE enables students to access all of the course materials, to interact and collaborate with fellow students and tutors and to complete and submit formative and summative exercises and assessments. The unit teaching methods will consist of a number of asynchronous methods:
- Recorded lectures in a form of screencast, leading to independent study of lecture notes available in MOLE
- Selected videos and interviews
- Analysis of case studies and other problem solving exercises
The unit will also use synchronous methods such as;
- Interactive discussions on discussion board or private social media
- Webinars and on-line discussions
Learning paths will guide the students through the material.

Progress will be measured against the learning path by allowing self-evaluation on-line tests, that are not formally assessed.
The formal assessment will be primarily made through a coursework report. Students will utilise their individual organizational contexts as case studies and present and justify a specific approach to leadership that will mobilise their immediate workforce to address a problem with service delivery; this discussion will be rooted in the literature and the materials presented throughout the unit. This analysis could also be extended to leadership within the context of disaster management. Each student will work directly with the Unit Leader in tailoring a case study approach that is contextually specific and academically rigorous.
