The development and application of new health technologies (pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical products and devices used to diagnose, monitor or treat diseases or enhance health and well-being) is crucial to the future prosperity of both developed and developing nations. Health technology assessment (HTA), and the associated strategies for pricing technologies and obtaining reimbursement from purchasers, is a relatively new area of expertise.

From an industry perspective, the effective assessment, pricing and reimbursement techniques for health technologies are critical to bringing a technology to market and thus to corporate success. From the perspective of those charged with governing health technologies and reimbursing providers, evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of health technologies is critical to equity and good governance of public monies.

The specific skills to undertake cost-effectiveness modelling, a key methodology within HTA, are highly technical and in high-demand within the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. This PG Cert in Cost-Effectiveness Modelling for Health Technology Assessment provides these skills, and its online learning, part-time mode of delivery has been developed in response to a clear demand from the health technology industries including pharmaceuticals, medical devices and diagnostic technologies.

Entry requirements
  • A bachelor's degree with a 2:1 (hons) in a related subject
  • English language requirements: IELTS minimum of 6.5 overall with minimum 6.0 in each component (or equivalent)
Taking modules via the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) route
  • It is possible to complete standalone modules via our Continuing Professional Development programme (please check individual module web pages for CPD availability), and then apply to transfer to one of our qualifications. Any time spent on the CPD route counts toward the time-limit a student has to complete their chosen qualification. Please contact the CPD administrator ( for further information.

The content of our courses is reviewed annually to make sure it's up-to-date and relevant. Individual modules are occasionally updated or withdrawn. How the course is taught

Authentic learning

This is a key element that drives the content of all modules. It means that we use real-world, real-life, up-to-date case studies, examples and scenarios, so that students can immediately see how their learning is "authentic", that is, applicable to their own working life, now and in the future.

Social learning

Learning is social: we learn from each other as much as from purely independent study. The course uses multiple tools to deliver content and facilitate interaction with and between tutors and students, including discussion and chat tools, webinar software for real-time discussion and collaboration, wikis and screencasts. The online tools used in the programme enable and support such reciprocal learning.

Variety and flexibility

The majority of the materials are provided in the form of text, videos, screencasts, internet-based materials, and the use of interactive online tools. Materials are provided in blocks or "sessions" of 2-3 weeks duration. We have found that this approach supports and motivates students, and better permits the thorough and comprehensive study of materials, completion of formative exercises by our students who are usually studying on top of a full-time job and with other calls of their time.

Related Courses As well as the MSc International Health Technology Assessment, Pricing and Reimbursement, which covers further aspects of HTA in more depth, we also offer the MSc Health Economics and Decision Modelling, run by the same department. This is a full or part-time face-to-face course which aims to develop students to be working professionals in HTA, decision modelling and health economic evaluation, capable of working immediately in health economics and outcomes research consultancies, university-based HTA centres, pharmaceutical and medical companies, healthcare and government organisations, or progressing in an academic career to PhD and further research.

We offer free short online courses during the year. These are open to everyone to provide an introduction to different topics in health economics such as 'Health Technology Assessment: Choosing Which Treatments Get Funded' and 'Measuring and Valuing Health: Quality Adjusted Life years and Patient Reported Outcome Measures'.
